'And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon." Re 16:13-16

ROME - The 'Little Horn' of Daniel 8

This last horn is by some taken for Antiochus Epiphanes, but not very judiciously. A horn of a Beast is never taken for a single person: it always signifies a new kingdom, and the kingdom of Antiochus was an old one. Antiochus reigned over one of the four horns, and the little horn was a fifth under its proper kings. This horn was at first a little one, and waxed exceeding great, but so did not Antiochus. His kingdom on the contrary was weak, and tributary to the Romans, and he did not enlarge it. - Isaac Newton

The French Revolution took atheism outside the salons and into the public sphere. Attempts to enforce the Civil Constitution of the Clergy led to anti-clerical violence and the expulsion of many clergy from France. The chaotic political events in revolutionary Paris eventually enabled the more radical Jacobins to seize power in 1793, ushering in the Reign of Terror. At its climax, the more militant atheists attempted to forcibly de-Christianize France, replacing religion with a Cult of Reason.

In the 19th century, many atheists and other anti-religious thinkers devoted their efforts to political and social revolution, facilitating the upheavals of 1848, the Risorgimento in Italy, and the growth of an international socialist movement. In the latter half of the 19th century, atheism rose to prominence under the influence of rationalistic and freethinking philosophers. Many prominent German philosophers of this era denied the existence of deities and were critical of religion, including Karl Marx, and Friedrich Nietzsche.

Atheism in the 20th century, particularly in the form of practical atheism, advanced in many societies. Atheistic thought found recognition in a wide variety of other, broader philosophies, such as existentialism, objectivism, secular humanism, nihilism, logical positivism, Marxism, feminism, and the general scientific and rationalist movement. Logical positivism and scientism paved the way for neopositivism, analytical philosophy, structuralism, and naturalism. Neopositivism and analytical philosophy discarded classical rationalism and metaphysics in favor of strict empiricism and epistemological nominalism.

"And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?" Re 6:10

"And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" HISTORY OF THE REMANT OF GOD'S TRUE ON EARTH
Rev 11:3-12

Revelation 11 represents the history of Christ's Faithful remnant during the reign on the antichrist.  Although severely persecuted the apostate church could not silence them.  In 1514, after an extended campaign to stamp out their testimony, the Catholic Church believed that they had succeeded, only to have this illusion shattered three and one half years later by the start of the protestant reformation.

The suppression of Christ's true witnesses is also likened to the trampling of the temple of God;  the true and holy part hidden from view, the outward visible Church is overrun with apostasy.

"But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist."
Lk 21:12-15

1179 - Third Lateran Council forbids the harboring of heretics and denies them burial.

1183 - Bull of Lucius III giving power to secular government for punishment of all heretics.

1198 - Innocent III urges clergy to employ  arms of all princes and people for the extirpation  of heretics

1215 - Fourth Lateran  Councils subordinates all secular power to the spiritual and absolves all vassals of allegiance to secular powers who fail to root out heresy.

1514 - Fifth Lateran Council declares that heretics have been completely silenced.

On May 5, 1514 the Fifth Lateran Council declared:
"There is an end of resistance to the Papal rule and religion: opposers there exist no more... The whole body is subject to its head, i.e. to thee."

On October 31st, 1517 Martin Luther launched the Protestant Reformation
when he nailed his ninety-five theses on the door at Wittenberg.

The 'Abomination of Desolation' is so important to the understanding of Bible prophecy that it is mentioned no less than seven times in scripture.  The gospels admonish us to 'let the reader understand'.  It is the KEY to prophetic interpretation, and failure to properly identify it has given rise to countless erroneous speculations.  When Jesus warned his followers of 'The Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet' he also clearly defined what this abomination was to be:

'When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:' Mt 24:15-16

In 70 AD the Jewish people revolted against Roman Rule.  The Roman General Titus sacked the city, razed it to the ground and burned the temple thus fulfilling the words of Jesus - 'there shall not be left one stone upon another which shall not be thrown down' Matt 24:2.  Approximately 1,000,000 Jews perished in the revolt.  In 132 AD remaining Jews in Jerusalem once again rose up in revolt against Rome - 600,000 Jews perished in the revolt.  A Temple to the god Jupiter was built in Jerusalem and Jews were banished from the city on pain of death.  Judea was renamed 'Palestina' after the Philistines, the ancient enemy of Israel. After the Rome became a 'Christian' Empire numerous churches and shrines were built in the city.  These Roman abominations remained in Jerusalem until Rome lost the city to Persian invaders in 614 AD.

     NOTE - THE VISIONS OF DANIEL 11:1 - 39 AND DANIEL 11:40 - 12:13

It is important to note that there is break in Daniel's last vision after chapter 11verse 39.  After tracing history through the last form of Roman power (Papal), there is a retrogression beginning in verse 40 with the words 'At the time of the end'.  Here the angel again begins with the rise of the Roman power and traces it to the consummation.  Note how the words of Jesus make this clear.

Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.' He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain....'

NOTE - HISTORY OF THE KINGS OF THE NORTH (SYRIA) AND SOUTH (EGYPT)

Daniel 11 begins by foretelling the last of the Persian Kings, the rise and fall of Alexander the Great, and the division of his empire to his four generals.  It then traces the history of the Syrian and Egyptian kingdoms down through the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, after which it takes up the history of the Roman power.  Having conquered Macedonia in 168 BC, the Romans grew into an empire - the fourth beast of Daniel 7 which severely persecuted the people of God.

'There shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity.' Da 11:1-4

NOTE: In Matthew 24:3-14 Jesus begins the Olivet Discourse by giving an overview of the entire Gospel Age.  Beginning in verse 15 he describes the event which would begin the 'Great Tribulation' - the 'Abomination of Desolation', followed by events which would transpire during that period, namely the rise of 'false prophets and false christs' - a description of the 'man of sin' described elsewhere in 2 Thess 2:9, and Rev 13:13

'And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.' Mt 24:3-14

NOTE ON 'THIS GENERATION' - MATTHEW 24:34

Many erroneous prophetic speculations have arisen due to a faulty interpretation of Matthew 24:34 (compare Mark 13:30, Luke 21:32).  Many students of prophecy see this passage as a 'time text' and fix the duration of the entire prophecy to a either a brief time of approximately 40 years in the first century, or at the end of time. The reference to 'this generation' is not however a 'time text' but rather a moral commentary on the perpetual degenerate state of the Jewish nation.  Note the words of Jesus:

'Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.'
Mt 23:33-36

The word 'generation here is the Greek word genea, which is defined by BDAG first as: those exhibiting common characteristics or interests.  The same evil, perverse generation which rejected the Messiah would persist throughout the ages until 'all things' which were prophesied to come upon them should come to pass.
  Abomination of Desolation

'When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place '

Mt 24:15-16
Luke 21:20
Mark 13:14

THE GREAT TRIBULATION

'Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.' Mt 24:16-21

'For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.' Mk 13:19

'Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations.' Lk 21:21-24

'But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,' Mt 24:37-38

The Wheat is Gathered into the Barn
Tares are gathered to be burned. Matt 13:30

'Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.' Mt 13:30

'...AND SHALL CAST THEM INTO A FURNACE OF FIRE - THERE SHALL BE WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH...'
Matt 13:42,50
Day of Judgment
The parables of the kingdom were given by Jesus as prophecies for the newly inaugurated Gospel age .  The kingdom of God would indeed suffer violence, and these parables testify to the apostasy which would overtake Christianity as the centuries wore on.  Some have mistakenly applied these passages to the end of the Jewish dispensation.  This is clearly an error.  While the Jewish system would be swept away in 70 AD, these parables - as we are expressly told - apply to the age of the kingdom.  The law and the prophets were until John - these parables reference the kingdom that began to be preached from that time forward.
FOUNDATION OF APOSTOLIC CHRISTIANITY
'Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:' Mt 13:24

'He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom...'
RISE OF CORRUPTED / COUTERFIET CHRISTIANITY

The corruption of the apostolic faith begin even in the first century and took root after the death's of the apostles.
Compare: Acts 20:29, 3 John 9-10

'But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.' Mt 13:25

'...but the tares are the children of the wicked one;' Mt 13:37-38
CHRISTIANITY BECOMES A FIELD OF GENUINE AND APOSTATE CHRISTIANS

'But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.'
Mt 13:26-29
THE  PARABLE  OF  THE  MUSTARD SEED

 Matt 13:31-32

←   THE GROWTH OF 'CHRISTENDOM' - THE 'KINGODM OF HEAVEN ON EARTH'   →

Day of Judgment
The 'Parable of the Mustard Seed' describes the progression of the kingdom of God on earth.  Although founded on the least of mankind (Matt 25:40) it would become large.  This growth however would be unnatural and the kingdom would grow into a monstrosity in which unclean spirits would make their home .
SMALL BEGINNINGS OF CHRISTIANITY
'Another parable put he forth unto  'The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:' Mt 13:31
THE SPREAD OF 'CHRISTENDOM'
'Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree...'
CHRISTENDOM BECOMES THE HAUNT OF UNCLEAN SPIRITS

'...So that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.' Mt 13:32

'And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.' Re 18:2

THE  PARABLE  OF  THE  LEAVEN

 Matt 13:33

The 'Parable of the Leaven' shows that the growth of the kingdom would be due to an unnatural and evil influence.  As leaven corrupts the whole, so the whole of Christendom would be corrupted by false teachers and false doctrine.  See 2 Tim 4:3, 2 Pet 2:1-3
'Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven...' '...Which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal...'
'Thou sufferest that woman Jezebel' Re 2:20
'...Till the whole was leavened.' Mt 13:33
'Beware the leaven of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy' Luke 12:1

THE  PARABLE  OF  THE  FISHING NET

 Matt 13:47-50

NOTE: The Harvest - Under the figure of a Harvest, Jesus describes the judgment on apostate Christendom which will transpire at the end of the age.  This period of extreme judgment which will culminate in a 'furnace of fire' and 'weeping an gnashing of teeth' is often misapplied to the doctrine of an eternal hell.  This however is an error.  A comparison with the Harvest of Rev 14 shows that these judgments are of an earthly nature and will culminate in the complete overthrow of apostate Christianity and the civilization which corrupted and promoted it.
'Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net...' '...That was cast into the sea...'
'...And gathered of every kind: which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.' Mt 13:47-50
