The 'Abomination of Desolation' is so important to the understanding of Bible prophecy that it is mentioned no less than seven times in scripture.  The gospels admonish us to 'let the reader understand'.  It is the KEY to prophetic interpretation, and failure to properly identify it has given rise to countless erroneous speculations.  When Jesus warned his followers of 'The Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet' he also clearly defined what this abomination was to be:

'When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:' Mt 24:15-16

In 70 AD the Jewish people revolted against Roman Rule.  The Roman General Titus sacked the city, razed it to the ground and burned the temple thus fulfilling the words of Jesus - 'there shall not be left one stone upon another which shall not be thrown down' Matt 24:2.  Approximately 1,000,000 Jews perished in the revolt.  In 132 AD remaining Jews in Jerusalem once again rose up in revolt against Rome - 600,000 Jews perished in the revolt.  A Temple to the god Jupiter was built in Jerusalem and Jews were banished from the city on pain of death.  Judea was renamed 'Palestina' after the Philistines, the ancient enemy of Israel. After the Rome became a 'Christian' Empire numerous churches and shrines were built in the city.  These Roman abominations remained in Jerusalem until Rome lost the city to Persian invaders in 614 AD.

     NOTE - THE VISIONS OF DANIEL 11:1 - 39 AND DANIEL 11:40 - 12:13

It is important to note that there is break in Daniel's last vision after chapter 11verse 39.  After tracing history through the last form of Roman power (Papal), there is a retrogression beginning in verse 40 with the words 'At the time of the end'.  Here the angel again begins with the rise of the Roman power and traces it to the consummation.  Note how the words of Jesus make this clear.

Compare 2 Thess 2:4

'And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.' He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain....'

NOTE - HISTORY OF THE KINGS OF THE NORTH (SYRIA) AND SOUTH (EGYPT)

Daniel 11 begins by foretelling the last of the Persian Kings, the rise and fall of Alexander the Great, and the division of his empire to his four generals.  It then traces the history of the Syrian and Egyptian kingdoms down through the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, after which it takes up the history of the Roman power.  Having conquered Macedonia in 168 BC, the Romans grew into an empire - the fourth beast of Daniel 7 which severely persecuted the people of God.

'There shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity.' Da 11:1-4
